Vera Lossau

Vera Lossau’s artistic practice explores the phenomenon of destabilization across psychological, social, and cultural dimensions. Her work engages with themes of transformation, identity, and the layered meanings of objects, often employing materials and forms that challenge traditional interpretations. Her oeuvre spans sculpture, installation, video, and performance, blending humor, subversion, and profound reflection. Influenced by feminist theory, historical art traditions, and contemporary cultural criticism, Lossau’s work contrasts fragility with resilience, inviting viewers to question the familiar and embrace uncertainty.

Lossau’s large-scale collages and sculptures operate through condensation. Open, ambiguous phenomena coexist, and complex references are translated into accessible symbols and clear motifs. Her work is characterized by the expression of ambivalence, the exploration of liminal spaces, and the play with the absurd, which prompts a reevaluation of our perceptual structures. The surfaces of her sculptures—produced using various casting techniques—stand in a charged contrast to the original object, its history, or its functional context.

Vera Lossau (*1976 in Haan) is a visual artist based in Düsseldorf, where she lives and works. After studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (under Prof. Magdalena Jetelová, as a master student, and Prof. Rita McBride), she completed a master’s degree at the Chelsea College of Art & Design in London. Since 2019, she has held a professorship in Sculpture & Space at the Detmold School of Design.
